Gimp: Creating Animations

Objectives and Overview

When you understand the basics of GIMP, it’s very easy to transition to intermediate skills such as using Layers. Layers can be used to create animations, also known as gifs. Layers are commonly used in image editing and retouching software other than GIMP, such as Adobe Photoshop, so it’s useful to get into the habit of using them.

Lesson Objectives

  • Practice creating Layers in Gimp
  • Use Layers to create a multi-layered character animation in Gimp
  • Export your animation from Gimp

Using Layers in Gimp

Layers are a useful tool to add to your graphic design toolkit. This enables you to create more intricate and complex designs. Let’s get started!

Opening the Layers Toolbox

After you have created your workspace, in the GIMP toolbar, locate Windows and then navigate to Dockable Dialogs. Click Layers. You may also use the shortcut Command + L.

Creating or Duplicating Layers

Once you have created your first frame in the workplane, you will probably want to duplicate it and change it slightly in your second frame. In order to duplicate your frame, you will select the Duplicate Layer icon in the Layers toolbox, shown below. Keep frames in the order they will appear by clicking twice on the title of the layer to rename them accordingly. If you would like to create a new layer and not duplicate an existing one, the Create Layer icon is on the bottom left of the Layers toolbox.

Saving Your Animation

When you have created all your frames, save your animation by selecting Export As from the GIMP toolbar. Give your animation a title and change the file type from .PNG to .GIF. GIMP recognizes this file type as an animation and a window will appear prompting you to save your project As animation – be sure to select this box. Change Frame disposal where unspecified to One frame per layer (replace). You may also choose to change the delay between frames to be slower or faster. To play your animation, drag the file from your desktop to a web browser.
